Following our destined pathway in life
'Amazing Grace' is a remarkable movie that brings us the true story about the abolition of the slave trade in 1700's Britian. William Wilberforce was the English politician who painstakingly led the political battle in parliment. His energy clearly demonstrated that we can never truly rest with peace in our hearts unless we honour the path of our true destiny...
Against all odds and chronic illness he found the will and strength to endure endless opposition. He walked the blade edge for 20 years during his campaign. William Wilberforce is a true inspiration. I would encourage anyone to see the film. My heart goes out to Bristol Bay Productions for bringing this remarkable story back to life!
The movie may inspire us look deeper into the fabric of our modern consumeristic lifestyle and bring light to the fact that slavery is still rife today in many different forms. According to Amazing Change (an organisation inspired by the movie to bring awareness and abolish modern day slavery) there are and esimated 27 million people are in slavery around the world. Was blind, but now I see
Interestingly the song Amazing Grace was written by John Newton in the mid 1700’s. The song transpired upon his contemplation of finding God whilst transporting slaves aboard his own ship. After ‘finding the light’ he converted to a slave abolitionist. He helped Wilberforce during his campaign to abolish the slave trade.
"Amazing Grace"
Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That sav’d a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.
’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears reliev’d;
How precious did that grace appear,
The hour I first believ’d!
Thro’ many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
’Tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.
The Lord has promis’d good to me,
His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.
Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease;
I shall possess, within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.
The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
The sun forbear to shine;
But God, who call’d me here below,
Will be forever mine.
John Newton
