29/02/08: "Plastic bags and all that rubbish..."

|

1 Billion fewer plastic bags - but is it enough?
It was announced today that in the UK we are using 1 billion fewer plastic bags a year; this is in response to government, media and pressure group campaigning. Personally I find it absolutely wonderful news as I'm sure many readers do. It seems we are beginning to build a collective conscience about our environment. I believe it's really important to share such successes and at the same time, it's also important that we continue to realise that such achievements are but a small drop in a rapidly filling ocean...

Change in our way of life
In my truth, what we really need if we are to truly turn back the tide of destruction, is to fundamentally change the way we live. In my view, we need to return to living in small, self supporting communities. I feel it is only this approach which can truly reduce carbon emissions enough to stem the seemingly inexorable rise of global warming. We need to radically reduce the amount energy and natural resources we use. If we can, we must terminate this insatiable beast of Industrial Consumerism.

Personally as things currently stand, I don't believe there is sufficient public will for the majority to turn back the tide voluntarily; for us to move to self sustaining lifestyles. Maybe then the benevolent hand of Higher Consciousness will help out? Maybe peak oil or global financial melt down will reduce our consumption for us?

Whatever happens, Openhand's advice to people remains the same... focus on the inner journey and you'll find safe passage into a brighter future.
