29/04/08: "Is a global recession a blessing?..."

Decline of World economies providing "breathing space"
In the world of Industrial Consumerism just the mention of the word "recession" is enough to spark fear and trepidation amongst consumers, retailers and bankers alike - but is the looming prospect of a global slowdown a blessing rather than a curse? I came across this article today in the UK's Financial Times...Fall in funding hits UK mall plans. Its about how the global credit crunch is dramatically retarding the building of American style shopping malls across the UK. Sad? Quite the contrary, I'm positively dancing across our cobble stoned streets!...
Yes a global recession is undoubtedly going to cause a great deal of discomfort for many but it strikes me that it may be just what the spiritual doctor has ordered. Recently in the UK we've had an oil refinery strike which has driven fuel to a new all time high. Again one might view this very negatively and yet does it not cause all of us to do the right thing - to be more careful about how much we drive? And therefore of course begin to turn down our unsustainable levels of consumption.
I've noticed more and more in recent months stories from around the so called "developed world" of people returning more to their roots; turning away from stressful careers that no longer serve, growing more of our own food, investing in renewable energies and beginning to build sustainable communities that help and support one another.
Whether intentioned or not, I can positively feel it bringing people more inline with the natural energetic flow of the Universe, more at-one with Mother Earth. It may be only the very early stages, but this growing trend is surely going to help more and more people connect with their authentic inner nature.
Of course we have a choice as to how we view events in our own lives and both on the world stage. For me, I see global economic slowdown as a blessing - a way in which we can begin to turn the tide in favour of more sustainable living and wider breathing space for our true humanity to re-emerge and to reconnect with our divine birthright - union with the divine.
Bright blessings to all!
Chris

Helping to dissolve attachments
Hi Chris and all,
I personally find that the global events that are happening help highlight my attachments to the external drama.
When I hear or read about global events i feel varying degrees of fear arising. As the fear arises I can trace it back to find what I am attached too. Facing, feeling and surrendering to the fear, as opposed to distracting myself away from it seems to dissolve a bit of the attachment. Each time this happens it feels as though a part of the attachment has been dissolved away, and when it arises again it doesn't carry as much energy. I can see that these events and the fear they provoke will help a lot of peoples unfolding.
Best wishes
david
For the love of "money" is the root of all evil
you must face the fact: the final age of this world is to be a time of troubles. Men will love nothing but money and self; they will be arrogant, boastful, and abusive;with no respect for parents,no gratitude,no piety,no natural affection;they will be implacable in their hatreds,scandal-mongers,intemperate and fiece, strangers to all goodness, adventurers, swollen with self importance. They will be men who put pleasure in the place of god, men who preserve the outward form of religion, but are standing denial of it's reality. (Timothy 3)
maybe seems more relevent now than when written.
Before we all either jump for joy or descend to the pits of despair at the possibilty of "economic melt down" I think we should take just a moment to contemplate the full implications. whatever our thoughts are if this deck of cards collapses it will inevitably lead to conflict and wars the beginings which have already started in places like Kenya.
Whenever recession is about then individually we all have to tighten our belt and consider our lifestlyes which is no bad thing Chris and Trinity and all those who speak on the same lines are very right that it is the disposable era which has led to a draining of natural resources which cannot continue as it is. Mother nature is very resiliant and can recover and at quite a miraclulous rate given help and support. This is seen in many marine conservation projects and very dramatically with the dropping of the necular bombs on Japan when days after grass began to grow again.
Is economic slowdown a blessing or curse? Both !! There is no doubt it will bring great hardship to many people, yet there will be those who will prosper from it.
I often find a wry smile when I hear people talk of return to the good old days and wonder when those days were??
For me my perception the good old days have not yet arrived to return to but somewhere to journey towards.
On that journey we should all remember that every choice, every decision and action we take causes a ripple on the pond. Contemplate every action with understanding, should we all change our lifestlyes ?
Abandon what is wrong, it is possible to abandon it, Were it is not possible to abandon what is wrong. I would not say: Abandon it. But because it is possible, therefore I say: Abandon what is wrong. (budda)
I leave with one final thought "WHAT ACTUALLY IS MONEY ????"

Attachments and distortions
Hi David,
A very warm welcome to you here on the forum
Thanks for your post concerning attachments. Yes I totally agree with you. It feels very strongly that we're moving into a global transition of consequences where each event seems to be synchronistically configured to provide an ever changing mirror - just how much are we attached to this external drama?...

How right you are when you say that the attachments that we dissolve in the moment keep reappearing afterwards but each time we work to dissolve them they get less strong.
From my perspective we're dealing with two aspects of the same thing here - attachments and distortions. Attachments tend to arise because of our karma. We store past life experiences in the causal body which connects directly to the heart chakra. The causal body is so called because it is the cause of our incarnation.
Our past life attachments are recreated in this life by our causal body. When these attachments are activated as young children, if they are sustained by our parents, then conditioned behavioural patterns develop forming fixed neural pathways in the brain - these distort the authentic actions of the soul - we may call them "distortions".
So for an example, lets say as a child we are very exuberant and questioning of life; it might be that in so doing we are very challenging to our parents which pushes their inner buttons making them frequently tense and angry. Now the child may either take on the blame and feel inwardly crushed, or alternatively they may become rebellious and overtly challenging.
Now a cycle of combative behaviours develop in the interplay leading to the generation of fixed neural pathways in the infant (the parents too of course!). These fixed neural pathways take time to dissolve - whilst we may suddenly realise our initial attachment and dissolve it instantaneously, we cannot just dissolve the distortion that has arisen from it.
From my perspective and experience, the best way (perhaps only way) to genuinely dissolve distortions is to confront them in the moments they arise and instead choose the higher truth - that aspect of divine beingness of the soul. If we do this, then over time (just as you point out), the distortions will dissolve and we'll be left with true authentic expression of the soul.
If anyone reading this is interested further, you might like to check out Openhand Approach which is a process people can apply in their daily lives for overcoming such distortions. We teach it on our second level course Way of the Heart.
Once again, thanks for the post David.

Divine beingness
Hi Chris,
Thank you for your reply, another bit of the jigsaw has slotted into place.

Working with Mother Earth
Well said Chris!
When I see the impact that the modern 'disposable' era has had on Mother Earth I can't help but feel that the economic slow down is filled with countless blessings.
I hear more people considering car sharing, buying local (supporting independent producers and stores rather than supermarkets etc) as well as turning financial limitations into resourcefulness and greater sense of community. I hear of all kind of community groups springing up.
Many people around here seem to be preparing for economic meltdown - yet they are doing it with joy, seeing that the reshaping will be of huge benefit to harmonious living. It requires a restructuring of many tenets of everyday life. Mother Earth openly embraces those who honour and respect her.
