the deeper meaning of an eye problem

lei's picture

I have an eye condition, it's medically termed 'Intermittent strabismus'. Basically when I look at things, sometimes two of my eyes don't look in the same direction (my right eye, the more short sighted weaker eye will turn right to look in a different direction). It's intermittent so it doesn't happen all the time, when it does happen I can consciously adjust my eye so they focus again. But often I'm not really aware how my eyes look, I can give people the impression that I'm not really looking at them when I talk to them. I've had the problem for over 12 years, it originally caused by the way I used to watch TV at home when I was around 15 or 16 years old. Back then because of the way our sofa was placed at home, I wasn't directly facing the TV when I watched it, rather I had to sit on the side with my head and eyes turned right in order to see the screen. Over time strabismus was caused by the unequal pulling of muscles on one side of the eye. If you look at this page ( http://trialx.com/curebyte/2011/05/25/pictures-for-strabismus/ ), my right eye looks pretty much like the picture of that man in the middle but my problem is just less severe and it happens intermittently. The problem has been with me for over ten years, I've never taken it seriously and never considered treating it, it felt more like a nuisance to me. But I've noticed that lately that the problem has gotten worse that I frequently have blurring vision and sometimes double vision. So yesterday I went to the doctor to have an eye check up, this is first time I got to know the name of this condition. She suggested me surgery to adjust the eye muscles on my right eye. But I'm not going to do the surgery because it's merely cosmetic and won't resolve the underlying cause of the problem, the muscle is unlikely to be perfectly adjusted and the deviation will likely to occur again over time. If I ever want to get my eye treated I will seek other options, such as vision therapy including eye patching or visual exercises. Right now my desire is to understand the symbolic meaning and underlying spiritual cause of the physical symptom. I have read about the meanings of different eye problems, here I quote:

EYE (astigmatism): Fear of "seeing" the self
AFFIRMATION: I am now willing to see my own beauty and magnificence.

EYES (cataracts): Inability to see ahead with joy
AFFIRMATION: Life is eternal and filled with Joy

EYE PROBLEMS: (children) Not wanting to see what's going on in the family
AFFIRMATION: Harmony and joy and beauty and safety now surround the child.

EYE (farsighted): Fear of the present
AFFIRMATION: I am safe in the hear and now. I see that clearly

EYE (nearsighted): Fear of the future.
AFFIRMATION: I accept life and am always safe

I also find the following from wikipedia particularly interesting.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strabismus

Signs and symptoms

One eye moves normally, while the other points in (esotropia or "crossed eyes"), out (exotropia), up (hypertropia) or down (hypotropia).

Strabismus is often referred to as "lazy eye". It can also be referred to as "crossed eyes", “wandering eyes”, or having a “cast”.[3] Other names include "squint",[4] "crossed eye", "spaggy eye", "google eye", "boss eye", "cock eye", "wonk eye", "codeye", "wok eye", "gam gam", "gloucester-ledbury","Ryland Optic Disorder", "sockeye" and "wall eye".

In addition to the strabismus problem, both of my eyes are also nearsighted. I wonder if you could shed some light on this condition of mine.

Focussing on the deeper meaning

Hi Lei,

I can empathise with you in a way - I have an eye 'problem' too - that of short sight.

I should immediately say that I've noticed all physical problems present a perfect vehicle for spiritual alignment.

For example, in walking my spiritual path I have found my physical short-sightedness a true blessing. I find that without glasses, the world looks quite blurred, but that causes my consciousness to naturally focus more within. So I have a tendency not to get wrapped up in the detail of the third dimension, but read the patterning through it instead.

Perhaps you're being invited to look at your 'problem' in a similar way?

To me, the left side of the body represents our presence in the physical world, the right side the spiritual. maybe your eye problem is inviting a different realignment than you currently have?

I sense a degree of self consciousness with your eye situation. Would that be correct? If so, then when connecting with people, there might be a tendency to connect too deeply in the physicality of the moment and to identify with it.

If however you can be more accepting of the moment and your 'eye problem', then maybe you would defocus your (self) consciousness in the 3rd Dimension just a little, and instead read the deeper meaning of what's going on in the moment?

Selectivity and multi-directionality

I don't know why but it landed on me that the selectivity of when it happens might have to do with who or what you are looking at?

And maybe see why it is happening, maybe not wanting to look in the eyes of a specific person? or blurring because you maybe don't want to see something or on the opposite, to see it in a more defocused/non-identified way?

And another thing that 'jumped' is multi-directionality, like you can 'look' in two directions simultaneously, maybe hinting on on the 'deeper' story behind the 'story on the surface'... or maybe about the shift from looking with eyes on looking with consciousness (and similarly for hearing - not listening but hearing, with the consciousness, not 'ears').

Love ya very much,
Yulia

yes deeper meaning

Thanks Chris, I think that's exactly it, I really resonate. I've thought of similar things but then dismissed them. Your response has provided a clear mirror for me to see what I'm being invited. It's very clear now!

Interestingly, my mother has made me an eye patch today to cover up my left eye so that my right eye will not look in the wrong direction.. (persistent wearing is supposed to train my right eye look normal again, how fascinating.. Smile

Yulia, I've never thought about the selectivity thing you mention. It's interesting to consider, but I can usually see people clearly when I talk to them face to face, it's just that they may think I'm not really looking at them as one of my eyes can sometimes look in entirely different direction. This does make self conscious sometimes.

Alternative ability

Hopefully you'll resist the eye path Lei!

People kept trying to get me to have lazer surgery. I just laughed! I see this 'disability' as an 'alternative ability' - a divine gift. It helps me share a constant telepathic dialogue with the higher realms.

And that, I wouldn't 'correct' for the world!

funny eye patch

Hi Chris, I mentioned that eye patch thing as a joke. Smile I thought it's an interesting synchronicity that she would make such a thing to make me 'normal' again. My mother is bent on 'helping' me integrating into society by encouraging me to eat cooked food and watch TV everyday. I've been wearing that patch this afternoon, it's pretty hilarious to wear such a thing. I had a lot of laugh with my mother about how I looked with the patch. (maybe Yulia will be interested in seeing it too Smile Of course, no, I'm not going to wear it, that's just ridiculous.
