Intriguing meditation experience
Hello,
While meditating the other day, something very powerful occured. I had reached a state of "trance", whereby my body started to feel very numb, as if drained of life. Almost instantly after that state settled, came a rush of energy which would be the equivalent of 30 000 volts, meaning it was huge and sustained, as if a body of light had awakened inside in lieu of my body of flesh. This was the first time I've ever experienced anything other than boredom in meditation so it was quite a leap. I must say, too, that I facilitated the process using binaural sound-generator software I got from the Web.
I'd read about astral projection so started to imagine doing that. For long minutes I could feel the body of light trying to lift itself out. So strong was the pull up, I got confused, and broke the trance state as I begun to try and help by lifting my physical head. It was a marvellous experience and I wonder what to make of it. Three days later I don't know if it made a difference in my life. Also, what is this energy compared with kundalini? Any thoughts?

what it was
Hi Chris - yes it was a one-off, it happened last Friday evening. I did another session the very next day which amounted to nothing. What remains of the experience is the memory of a direct connexion to an energy which felt like supernatural, I find no other word. I tried to "communicate" at this point with it, I had a sense of awe, respect and love but also of playfulness, in other words I wasn't scared, or rather, every time fear started to creep in, which it did inevitably now and then because the energy was so awesome, I was able to reassure myself that this must be God or something related, and therefore I had nothing to fear.
The only noticeable change is feeling more upbeat than usual since it happened. No big event, revelation, or anything spectacular. Besides my personality is very down-to-earth in many ways. I was extremely impressed, but not overwhelmed. Immediately after I "came back" it was life as usual. But the inner knowing remains, and I hope this is the beginning of many wonders and revelations! I will follow the advice I was given to keep meditating, because it makes sense to me now to do it. It had struck me listening to a David Lynch interview some time ago, how he defined meditation as an ineffable and even pleasurable experience. Now I understand what he means. I have been warned, though, that the experience may not be as intense or successful every time.
Thanks Chris for your kind and informative reply.

Probationary period
Hi m_b,
I would say you are going through what is loosely termed the 'probationary period'. It is thought we evolve spiritually through 5 expansions of consciousness as follows:
- Baptism/awakening - the lower self connects with the soul/true self
- Discipleship - the aspirant steps fully onto their spiritual pathway, the soul influences greatly daily life
- The Transfiguration - the transition to living as the true self/soul which takes leadership over the personality
- The Crucifixion - transmuting the inner imposter of the soul
- The Resurrection - bringing the soul/true self fully into the body mind
Before this process begins, is a probationary period where we may experience events such as the one you describe which can be intense and truly wonderful but where there is no lasting change to our consciousness.
If you continue to meditate, this is likely to help bring about the first level - awakening.

Chris - this is all very
Chris - this is all very troubling and most daunting! Yet I think it is what I want. Once it is set in motion there is no turning back, right? The transfiguration post was very interesting. I undertand the crucifixion level to be metaphorical, am I correct?

Crucifying the imposter
Hi m_b,
Yes I guess it can seem quite daunting but it is a truly beautiful and wonderful process. There will be many ups and downs but it is very worthwhile - in truth this process of self realisation is the only thing going on in the universe so why not fully embrace that?
You may have noticed that each stage of the expansion of consciousness can be related to the story of Jesus (and other spiritual masters). To me, whether the events of Jesus's life actually happened or not is irrelevant. What matters is the story itself for I have noticed these five expansions occurring in many other people.
So yes the story is a metaphor for what we are all likely to experience - I believe the story was provided by higher consciousness so that we could understand more readily what we will each go through.
Of course in the story the events such as the crucifixion were extremely dramatic! The key is to understand what was happening to consciousness during the event.
As the true self - the soul - takes governance over the personality, then the true self begins to sense its demise. By design an imposter forms internally (an identity forms in the mind) which hides by mirroring the actions of the true self.
The imposter is both our friend and enemy. If you like it can be considered as a shadow of the true self - in this way it helps to develop behaviours in the brain which support the authentic actions of the soul.
The downside is that it acts like a subversive personality which can distort the purpose of our actions - where the soul commits selfless action, the imposter tends to reap some selfish return - glamour is a typical example which is why there tends to be so much glamour in spiritual arenas.
At some point we must confront the imposter and completely destroy it. When Jesus called out from the cross "father why hast thou forsaken me?" it may be considered that it was his own inner imposter that was being crucified - the true self knows it is NEVER forsaken by God because we are one and the same.
The crucifixion then is about relinquishing our final attachments - fears that we are still in some way separate from God. How this event will unfold for you personally will depend on the attachments - your karma - that you came here to release.
The event could be as dramatic as in the story or it could be more gentle. It depends on what you lined up for yourself before you came here. Don't be surprised however if it is dramatic - just consider what many people have to go through in their lives.
The key thing to remember is that you will never be required to do anything greater than you are capable of.

Opening of the crown chakra
Hi m_b,
It feels like what you experienced was an opening of the crown chakra - the fontanel - and a reconnection with unity consciousness - that which unites us all.
For each of us, the true self is a unique harmonic of one consciousness that connects us all. It is what many people refer to as the soul. By design, the true self looses itself at conception within the developing mind and body.
From an early age we are conditioned into believing we are the mind and body. Neural pathways develop in the brain which become an identity - our personalities. The consciousness that is the true self animates these functions but is ‘diluted’ by them such that we can no longer feel it. Like most people, we become desensitised to it.
The true self is then ‘divided’ into a higher self and lower self. The lower self is that part which pervades the personality and the higher self may be considered that which connects the lower self to the whole of life.
The connection happens in the crown chakra. As the baby grows, the fontanel hardens and closes - this mirrors the closing of the crown chakra. We experience being separated from unity consciousness.
Of course we are too young at this point to be able to rationalise what is going on. A young baby for example knows no difference between itself and its mother - it is taught and conditioned into thinking it is separate.
The more separate we believe ourselves to be, the more we create that reality for ourselves - we can’t really avoid this. Every experience we have reconfirms the mental programming that we are all separate beings.
However, as we evolve, at some magical point, the crown chakra begins to open. The consciousness of the lower and higher selves reconnect once more and the higher self ‘floods into’ the lower self. I believe this is what you experienced.
It is what many refer to as the ‘awakening’. Often though, the first experience merely leads to a probationary period until the full awakening then happens where we feel permanently connected to that consciousness.
That doesn’t mean we necessary experience the same intensity all the time but there remains a deep inner knowing of our connection to all things.
Was the experience a one-off? Has anything of the experience remained with you? Are there any noticeable changes in your inner state of being?
Best wishes
Chris
