What exactly are chakras anyway?

What exactly are chakras, and how do they effect people?

Centres of consciousness

Hi Sam,

To me the chakras are centres of consciousness throughout the body and they have a deeply profound effect on all aspects of our lives. It can be said that all our choices in life depend on the level of vibration within the chakras.

So for example, the coccyx is the centre guiding attachment to the material plane. If the vibration is low, as in the vast majority of the world's population, then we observe attachment to material things - both possessions and experiences (including sex). However when we raise the vibration in the coccyx, this transmutes to an aspiration for higher spiritual growth and evolution.

The sacrum is our emotional centre. When the vibration is low, it manifests as attachment in relationships, envy and jealousy. However, when the vibration is raised, this transmutes to sensuality in relationships.

The solar plexus governs our awareness of the surrounding energy field and its effects on us. When the vibration is low, we tend not to be aware of the impact of the field and become addicted to material substances such as nicoteine, caffeine, sugar and other drugs. However, when we raise its vibration, we take 'control' over the lower animal and begin to sense the wider etheric field.

The Heart is the centre of 'Christ Consciousness'. When the vibration is low, we tend to form judgments of others and we tend to only be able to hold one truth - it is difficult to value other people's points of view. However as this chakra opens fully, we can hold multiple truths without being judgmental and there is no inner attachment to any one truth.

The throat chakra is the centre for interdimensionality. When the vibration here is low, we tend to identify more with our individual ego in this plane of existence. However, when we raise the vibration, our consciousness unfolds into all the other dimensions in which we exist and we become increasingly God conscious aware of the full beauty of life.

The third eye only really opens when we are consciously embarked on our pathway of spiritual unfolding. When this opens, we become increasingly aware that everything we encounter and observe in our lives is a reflection of what we are being on the inside. We know instantly what each person and event is reflecting to ourselves about ourselves.

The fontanel or crown chakra is where universal consciousness and individual consciousness meet. When this fully opens, we become as one with the universal flow of energy and our lives become truly magical.

Hope this helps!

How do I unblock my heart chakra?

Very appropriate topic of discussion since I have been exploring chakra meditation at home lately, and finding it a tad frustrating! Every time I begin to focus on the heart chakra it feels as if I am going to implode as I am being crushed with a tonne weight around the heart.

Then I move through the other chakras, feeling dreadful, as if I have unfinished business and a major blockage preventing the flow of chi through my whole system. Feels like I stuck in a black hole - I obviously have a blockage - How do I free up my heart chakra?

Opening the chakras

Chakras are non tangible - etheric - in nature. They can be opened by releasing tension and effort in their location. There are a number of ways to do this. One good method is by breathing. So for example, you can exhale with your awareness in the chakra and then as you've exhaled, focus on releasing effort and tension in that location.

In 'Openhand Meditation in Movement' we use an ancient Kriya Yoga technique of inhaling at the crown chakra and then exhaling into the other chakras sequentially to create are circular polaric flow through your meridian energy field.

Another way of opening chakras is through sound vibration - so you can hum or sing into the chakra - placing your awareness in the chakra location and directing the sound vibration there.

Chakras can also be opened through visualisation techniques, visualising a flower opening for example, although one should be careful using this technique because the opening may come with its own spontaneous imagery which can be blocked if you are creating your own visualisations with your intention.

If you've not practiced any of these techniques before, I would recommend you undertake a course in it - Our "Unveiling the true Self" teaches these techniques and also on our retreats.

Hope this helps!

Openhearted surrender to 'blockages'

Hi Turtle,

I remember the first time I started doing chakra meditation having some issues similar to those which you describe. I would sense major discomfort the region of a particular chakra. Listening to my 'higher guidance' prevented me from going any further with anything until I completely opened my heart in surrender to the blockage that I was experiencing. Being absolutely accepting of it, seemed to make the less than harmonious issue or feeling dissolved - It seemed that I had learned what ever it was that the universe was revealing to me through the discomfort and the particular 'blockage' vanished back into the nothingess from which it came. Very liberating!

By fully experiencing and accepting whatever was preventing the free flow of energy through my system, I quickly learned that I could release any blockages in my system as they arose, and I began to experience a very powerful unhindered flow of energy thoughout my being.

The Openhand techniques are really powerful for releasing blockages... when I first began with the techniques, I had a streaming series of major breakthroughs.

Abundant Blessings
