What should I experience in meditation?

I would like to know what I should expect to experience in meditation? I have heard many things from out of body experiences to streaming visualisations. What are your thoughts on it?
Jill

Expectation is the "killer"!

Thanks for your question. Expectation is the 'killer' for experience. I would guess there is a unique experience for everyone. Mostly we 'only' experience subtle sensations - a sense of expansion, of peace, maybe vibrations. If we expect too much, we can overlook these feelings. The paradox is, the more we connect with the subtle sensations, the stronger they become and are then more likely to be carried over into daily life. These feelings can expand into a deep inner peace, love, energy and ultimately bliss.
Others may have visualisations or streaming imagery. It could be that you have an 'out of body' experience although one needs to be very careful if these begin to happen because of the possibility of having an entity reside in the body.
The main benefit other than that initially stated, is that we begin to experience guidance more in daily life. We become much more aware of the subtle influences of higher consciousness and we begin to notice synchronicities more. These experiences are profoundly beneficial to one's life.

Pressure on top of head during meditation

Hi again everyone!

Since taking your advise Chris, on focusing on my body during meditation, I have been able to stay grounded and not feel out of body. Last night however, within a couple of minutes, I got this really strong pressure on the top of my head. I invited it to go down my body, visualising it to be light and love. It did appear to travel downwards, although the pressure in my head would not lessen and I got scared! It took a long time afterwards to get my vision back to normal as it was like tunnel vision. I read somewhere that this pressure occurs because my impure mind or fear is not allowing the divine in. Would you agree with this?

Thank you

Ever present divine spark

Hi Semira,

I am so pleased to hear that you are able to stay much more grounded during meditation. Well done for such commitment to the path.

With regard to pressure on top of your head. I'll be interested to hear what Chris has to say. For now, I have a few words to share as I have had similar experiences.

First of all, it usually helps not to try. Often in trying we create more tension making the discomfort even more intense (i.e. we give energy to the discomfort by feeding it).

When this type of events has happened to me, I learnt to watch the pressure whilst feeling my consciousness sink into the heart of the discomfort. I learnt to see it as a friend rather than an enemy. The pressure then began to dissipate naturally. I’d realised that it was sent to invite me to attune to the light rather than identify with the inconvenience. Once I let go, the purpose had been served and hence the pressure dissolved.

Have you ever tried deep breathing techniques? It may help to focus on deep breath if something like that becomes overwhelming. Allow each exhale to release that which no longer serves you and breathe in divine light with each inhale.

I would like to share with you this. The divine is with you always!!! It may feel at times that we are not letting it in because we have blockages. Yet it is always within. The mind may lead you to believe that you are not connected to the divine at times. It is a mental bluff. If ever you feel disconnected from the source you might like to go within finding the ever present divine spark there first.

Opening of the crown chakra

Hi Semira,

Thanks for your sharing - I wholeheartedly agree with what Trinity said in her post above.

My intuition tells me that your Crown chakra is beginning to open and activate. Opening the chakras can be a kind of bitter sweet experience. In effect we are switching the balance of consciousness from identification with the personality (represented by the bodymind), to identification with the soul.

The personality wishes to resist this transition because it begins to sense its own 'demise' (of course its not going to die, just our identification with the personality dies but to the personality it may feel like a death nevertheless). Correspondingly we may get negative feelings - such as the pressure. So in a way yes, fear is tending to resist the transformation (fear based within the personality).

For me, one way of overcoming it is just as Trinity suggested. To go right into the centre of it. Don't try or effort to cure it. Simply be present with it and become 'awesomely okay' with the feeling. Try exhaling into it and hold the breath on full exhale remaining as relaxed as possible. Then feel yourself opening up and you will begin to draw in the higher consciousness of the soul. It may help to visualise - so for example the ripples on a pond gently flowing outwards, or the warming rays of the sun causing a flower to blossom. This will facilitate the opening of the chakra and over time, the dissolving of the discomfort.

Its actually no surprise at all to me at all that you would be experiencing this considering your previous posts about your tendency to go "out-of-body". The crown chakra connects directly to our "spirit light body" (also known as the "merkaba). It is one of our seven bodily vehicles of expression (see...The Seven Bodily Vehicles). It facilitates our unfolding into multidimensional living. When active, it enables us to travel on astral planes whilst still in the body.

When the consciousness of the chakra is low, there is a tendency to be fearful of the experience of multidimensionality - the fear was probably the cause of your tunnel vision experience. The personality was fighting to close down your new expansion.

So in summary my advice would be to keep going. To become completely present within the crown chakra and reduce tension and effort there. Become awesomely okay with what you may be experiencing especially discomfort. Higher guidance tells me you're on the verge of a big opening-up, a powerful acceleration in your consciousness providing you can let go of your fear - I'm being shown a champagne cork popping out of a bottle!

Exciting times indeed Smiling

An acceleration in consciousness

Thank you Trinity and Chris for your wonderful replies. I am so glad I’ve had you to guide me these past few weeks. I do feel that things are accelerating for me right now.

I tend to analyse my thoughts and feelings, and have been doing so for as long as I can remember. There was a point at which I felt I’d reached a standstill, because I understood myself well, yet felt unable to move forward and change my distortions. A year ago, certain realisations then came to me following some events that took place. As for the past few months, I have been having quite extreme ups and downs. Every other week I feel either suicidal or fearful that I’m going to get some awful disease and die. Then, the next week I’m fine, feel focused and centred (this has been going on for a few months now. I have a 14-month-old baby so I put it down to post-natal depression). On the up side, I have made a couple of small but significant life changes that I’ve been putting off/working up to for quite a while.

To read your replies has reaffirmed to me that I am not going insane and that something wonderful is really happening. Trinity, thank you for your sharing and for reminding me that the divine is not something outside of me, but is already a part of me. I take great comfort in knowing that you too have experienced the pressure and that it is nothing to fear. I will just ‘let it be’ next time. Also, I am very excited and thankful to hear that as you say Chris, you feel I am on the verge of ‘a powerful acceleration in consciousness’. It certainly feels to me as though my life so far is now culminating.

Thank you both again,

Motherhood and meditation

Semira,

I am deeply warmed that you have shared with us too. It often takes a great strength to reach out and bare your soul! There are other people who will be experiencing similar things to you, reading and making sense of what they are going through too.

The questions that you ask are are powerful and a confirmation that you are headed in the right direction, content only to move forward, shedding the layers that no longer serve you.

I am a mother too and remember those days of babies Winks. It feels to me that you have a very powerful internal guidance that is propelling you forward. Motherhood is for me possibly the most intense challenge of being human. I would have floated off long ago if it were not for the very grounding reality that motherhood brings with it.
